Ukraine
In February 2022, Vladimir Putin launched a military invasion of Ukraine. A devastating humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in the country. There are 2.7 million people with disabilities currently residing in Ukraine. These individuals form part of the most vulnerable and marginalised. They don’t have the necessary support, resources, or care to help them escape the conflict, let alone recover from their injuries.
In May 2022, Walkabout Foundation launched the #Walkabout4Ukraine campaign to send 100 wheelchairs to people with mobility disabilities in Ukraine. Thanks to a generous donor, along with our community fundraising, we were able to send an emergency container to Lviv together with our partner, Momentum Wheels For Humanity. In February 2023, the container of wheelchairs arrived at our partner’s Assistive Technology Hub in Lviv and has been distributed throughout Ukraine through their network of providers and channels. They have set up rehabilitation and seating clinics across western Ukraine, which allows us to reach a larger geographical area of people in need.
