Luke’s London Marathon 2024!

Dear Friends and Family,

I consider myself so fortunate to be able to take part in the London Marathon!  As a way to give thanks, I am running on behalf of those that don’t have the same opportunity that I have. We oftentimes take our ability to walk, run, to move freely, for granted.  Walkabout’s mission really spoke to me because of the quest to provide life changing equipment to those in need in the developing world and beyond.  Please join me in supporting this amazing organization and their mission to change lives around the world.

We are officially about a month and half away from race day!  So far, training is going great, and I’m really thinking I can hit my PR and the lofty goal I have set for myself.  In addition to my race time goal, I am confident we can meet or exceed the fundraising goal I have set! Please consider donating to my campaign and to Walkabout if you have the chance. Walkabout is doing some amazing things for those with mobility disabilities in developing countries!  Feel free to reach out to me or check them out https://www.walkaboutfoundation.org/, if you have any questions!

Thank you all!

San Diego Mobility Foundation For Walkabout

Hi!

We are the San Diego Mobility Foundation, a group of high schoolers from San Diego who are passionate about helping others.

Currently, we are working with Walkabout Foundation, with the goal of raising $5,000 for a wheelchair repairs project in Venezuela. Some of our members are from Venezuela, and know just how difficult it is to get medical related products while living there. The lack of accessibility to essential medical equipment, like wheelchair equipment, can be a daunting and distressing experience for those affected.

So, in honour of the less-fortunate, it would mean so much if you could donate any amount of money to this campaign! Every single donation makes a difference.

Thank you!

Jordon’s London Marathon 2023

If you’re here, then I hope that you’ve already decided to support me and Walkabout Foundation by donating to my London Marathon fundraiser. (Thank you in advance!) But for anyone that would like to read on, here’s a little more context as to why I’m about to run a marathon…again.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Long story short(ish), I have unfinished business with marathons.

Back in 2020, I accepted a role which would move me from Chicago to London. Though the pandemic made my transatlantic move interesting (read: complicated and slow) I was finally able to move in Nov. 2020 – just in time for lockdown to be extended (yay!). Looking to fill time until the UK would be back to “normal,” I turned to running outdoors to get my bearings in my new city – in between Netflix and researching banana bread recipes.

I was surprised to learn… I loved running.

So I signed up for a marathon, trained, and then race was cancelled. With the event cancelled, the race organisers offered that we could run the marathon around a horse track instead. It wasn’t what I had in mind, but it was 26.2 miles nonetheless. Marathon complete.

Yet in the back of my mind, I knew that I wanted to experience the energy of a “normal” marathon someday.

ABOUT WALKABOUT FOUNDATION

Someday presented itself when Euromonitor’s charity partner, Walkabout Foundation, offered me a place in the 2023 London Marathon. This meant that not only could I “re-do” my marathon experience – I now had the opportunity to run for a great cause.

All of that said, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially set myself the challenge of running the 2023 London Marathon in honor of the Walkabout Foundation. I am aiming to fundraise £3000 for Walkabout Foundation’s global wheelchair projects. £3000 is the equivalent of 12 life-changing wheelchairs for people in need in the developing world.

If you’re still reading: 1) thank you and 2) consider this your invitation to support me in reaching my goal and to support Walkabout Foundation in its mission to change the world of mobility disabilities, one person, one wheelchair at a time. As you’re donating, think that you’ll be providing someone with the mobility that we so often take for granted

Every pound/dollar makes a difference. Thank you in advance for all the support!

Impact Overland For Kenya

Hello everyone! Thank you for checking out my fundraising page in support of the Walkabout Wheelchair Assembly & Repair Centre in Kenya.

In May 2022, my mom and I joined the Walkabout team for a trip to their Centre in Nanyuki. It was an incredible experience that will stay with us forever! We met the local team, learned how to assemble and fit wheelchairs, went on an outreach distribution and even played sitting volleyball! We felt so fortunate to be a part of such a powerful mission.

This was my first time in Kenya, a place I wanted to experience first-hand after hearing about the Walkabout Centre. I had been to Africa before, and experienced the hardships people face, but not since becoming a wheelchair user myself. It was very humbling, to say the least. Being from the US, I hadn’t considered the stigma surrounding persons with disabilities. People will disassociate themselves from you if you have a child with a disability, and you are left isolated from the community. It’s heart-wrenching, but despite the adversity, they are some of the strongest people I’ve ever met.

The Kenyan team at the Walkabout Centre consists of 16 local staff members, six of whom are wheelchair users and past beneficiaries, who assemble and fit wheelchairs for people in need across the country. The team’s family mentality and caring energy shines through from the second you meet them.

I could go on and on about my experience in Kenya, but I suggest you watch the video about our trip by clicking the button below. It was really a special experience for my mom and I, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Your contributions not only provide wheelchairs to people in need, but also provide employment, create purpose, and help change the stigma surrounding disability.

I’m more driven now than ever before to help support the Walkabout Kenya Centre, and I’m aiming to raise $35,000 for a container of life-changing wheelchairs for kids and adults in need.

Together, we have the power to change lives! Every little bit helps!

Thank you!

Celebrate Luis’ Birthday With Walkabout

September is a very special month for all of us at Walkabout – it marks Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month and our co-founder Luis’ birthday! He is the very first #WalkaboutHero and a huge inspiration to us all.

Luis was Spinal Cord Injured at the age 18. He was a high-school graduate, with his whole life ahead of him… but he didn’t let his injury stop him from making a positive impact in the world. Since launching Walkabout in 2009, Luis and his sister Carolina have changed the lives of over 60,700 people around the world!

As many of you know, the Dominican Republic is a very special place for the Gonzalez-Bunster family, a second home. Children with mobility disabilities in the Dominican Republic are in huge need as the country lacks supply of specialized pediatric wheelchairs. This October, the Walkabout Team aims to return to the Dominican to provide 200 life-changing wheelchairs to children in need.

In honor of Luis and his mission to improve the lives of people with mobility disabilities around the world, we are asking you to celebrate his birthday with us by making a donation!

100% of your donation will go towards giving the gift of mobility to children in need in the Dominican Republic.

Camilla’s Royal Parks Half Marathon 2022

Dear family and friends,

Thank you for making it to this page and for sponsoring me for my first-ever half marathon.

The event is just 5 short weeks away… and so far I have run a maximum of 6km. To say, it’s a challenge for me is an understatement – as many of you know I do not run AT ALL and up until recently was a very heavy smoker too. Combine the two, and it’s safe to say you do not have a recipe for marathon success…!

However, in honour of those who cannot run, and to support a charity that is incredibly dear to my heart, I am working hard to change my ways and complete the half on the 9th October!

Having worked at Walkabout Foundation for 4+ years, I can promise that 100 percent of what I raise will go 100 percent to supporting two people in need of wheelchairs in Uganda. Having visited Walkabout’s projects myself, and personally met disabled South Sudanese refugees who have fled the conflict to the safety of Uganda – I can’t overstate just how much a wheelchair can help improve their quality of life. It can help a child go to school, a parent to go to the market or a mother to simply feel beautiful again and have her dignity back. By supporting me today, you aren’t only giving back the gift of mobility to two people but you are also standing for a basic human right.

Absolutely every penny raised counts!! Thank you so much for the support. I promise to send you a sweaty selfie after the event and to personally update you on the two lives you’ve helped to change too.

Thank you!

Camilla
