Walkabout Foundation Turns 15!
Dearest Friends,
They say a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
For our family, this step was discovering how difficult life can be for people with mobility disabilities after Luis was left paralysed in a car accident at the age of 18. In August 2009, exactly 15 years ago, we turned our pain into passion and launched Walkabout Foundation with an 870-kilometre trek along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Luis became the first person in the history of Spain to cross the entire country with solely the use of his arms.
Our leap of faith has led to such profound positive change for thousands and thousands of people around the world. To date, we have impacted the lives of over 71,000 people through the distribution of over 27,200 wheelchairs in 25 countries around the world. We also operate our Wheelchair Assembly Centre and rehabilitation centre in Kenya, as well as a Wheelchair Distribution Centre in Haiti with our partner, Hope Health Action. Last but not least, we have funded nearly $2 million in research to find a cure for paralysis.
These milestones wouldn’t have been possible without your support. As Walkabout turns 15 years old, we ask you to consider supporting us once again. We will not only celebrate our achievements this year, but also launch our “15th Birthday Campaign” to raise $1 million for our global projects.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
