Camilla’s Royal Parks Half Marathon 2022

Dear family and friends,

Thank you for making it to this page and for sponsoring me for my first-ever half marathon.

The event is just 5 short weeks away… and so far I have run a maximum of 6km. To say, it’s a challenge for me is an understatement – as many of you know I do not run AT ALL and up until recently was a very heavy smoker too. Combine the two, and it’s safe to say you do not have a recipe for marathon success…!

However, in honour of those who cannot run, and to support a charity that is incredibly dear to my heart, I am working hard to change my ways and complete the half on the 9th October!

Having worked at Walkabout Foundation for 4+ years, I can promise that 100 percent of what I raise will go 100 percent to supporting two people in need of wheelchairs in Uganda. Having visited Walkabout’s projects myself, and personally met disabled South Sudanese refugees who have fled the conflict to the safety of Uganda – I can’t overstate just how much a wheelchair can help improve their quality of life. It can help a child go to school, a parent to go to the market or a mother to simply feel beautiful again and have her dignity back. By supporting me today, you aren’t only giving back the gift of mobility to two people but you are also standing for a basic human right.

Absolutely every penny raised counts!! Thank you so much for the support. I promise to send you a sweaty selfie after the event and to personally update you on the two lives you’ve helped to change too.

Thank you!

Camilla

Dear friends & family,

This year, I have set myself the challenge of running the 2022 London Marathon in honour of Walkabout Foundation, aiming to fundraise £3,000 for their global wheelchair projects! £3,000 is the equivalent of 12 life-changing wheelchairs for people in desperate need in the developing world.

I invite you to support me in reaching my target, and support Walkabout Foundation in its mission to change the world of mobility disabilities, one person, one wheelchair at a time.

Every donation makes a difference. Thank you for all your support!

Domenico’s London Marathon 2022

Dear friends and family,

In 2022, I will be completing the London Marathon in honour of Walkabout Foundation! My goal is to raise $4,000 (£3,000) – the equivalent of 12 life-changing wheelchairs for people in need in the developing world.

I invite you to support me in reaching my target, and support Walkabout’s mission to change the world of mobility disabilities – one person, one wheelchair at a time. Every dollar, euro or pound you give will go towards providing someone in need with the gift of mobility.

Thank you and best wishes,

Domenico

Christian’s London Marathon 2022

I’m lacing up my running shoes and training for another marathon! I’m excited to share that this time it’s across the pond in the UK. Most importantly however, I am running in honor of my brother, Cory, who was born with spina bifida—a condition which can severely limit a person’s mobility.

I invite you join me in supporting the Walkabout Foundation’s mission to provide dignity, freedom and independence to people with mobility disabilities around the world. 100% of every donation will go towards providing someone in need with a life-changing wheelchair.

My goal is to raise $4,000, enough to supply 12 wheelchairs for those in need, but I can’t do it alone! Every dollar counts, and I would be so grateful for a donation of any size.

If you are unable to assist financially at this time, spreading the news to friends and family who may also like to join in this mission would mean a lot. Simply share the link to this site via text, email, or social media.

I greatly appreciate your support in making a positive impact on the lives of those with mobility disabilities.

Wheelchair for Enhanced Mobility

Disability is an evolving concept and it results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal as well as environmental barriers that hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

Disabilities can occur at any stage in a person’s life, such as during pregnancy, delivery, infancy, childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. The major causes of disabilities include: infections, poisoning, radiation, genetic defects, accidents, violence including war, lack of oxygen during birth, harmful traditions, poverty and ignorance, lack of sufficient and balanced food, lack of social contact, and the occurrence of chronic diseases.

It is estimated that there are about 20 million Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ethiopia. These fall under different categories of disabilities which include i) Sensory Impairments: deficiency or constraints in sight, hearing, smelling and/or tasting; ii) Physical Disabilities: disabilities that are related to hands, legs, chest, backbone, shoulder, bottom and the like; iii) Intellectual Disabilities (autism as well as other defects in understanding one’s environment, learning, and writing; and iv) Psychosocial Disabilities: psychosocial problems such as depression, isolation, sleeping for long hours, as well as failure to achieve personal and social goals.

Following the sweeping political and socioeconomic changes in Ethiopia which began in April 2018, there have been sporadic and recurrent conflicts maliciously instigated in several parts of the country by some covert groups who vehemently oppose to the promising reforms, contributing to a lot of property damage, deaths and physical disabilities. More alarmingly, the number of persons with physical disabilities and sensory impairments is likely to increase dramatically due to the war being waged in Northern Ethiopia. Therefore, the Disability Affairs Directorate under the Ethiopian Ministry of Women and Social Affairs strives to mobilize mobility enhancing resources from around the world! We urgently need supports in kind (particularly such mobility aids as wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes, and crutches) in order to positively and productively respond to the crucial needs of PWDs in Ethiopia.
